Mailbag: 2009 U.S. Senior Open

  • What you do off of the course is by far greater than what you do on the course. I may have been stern in my comments about the past U.S Senior Open. I, like many, wnated this to be your Championship you so richly deserve. I have an Autistic son. What you do for charity and for those less fortunate is the true inspiration. Yes, it hurt to see the frustration and dissapointment in yor eyes on Sunday. But, like always, you ate up the back 9 and never quit. As usual the golf God's would not let a perfect put drop on 18...that's the game! Not much you can do when Fred was SO on his game. And like you, he is a true man of class. Please play more in 2010. With the new adoption of the grooves many of the young guns are going to find how tough it is. Don't hang your guns up yet... you have too many victories left... on and off of the course! I am 49, thanks for letting me have a hero I can still look up to and learn from. However, you are in 2nd behind my son!:-)

    - Mike, Torrance, CAL

  • Greg - win or lose, it was great to see you play and if you hadn't played great, you wouldn't have made the top ten. I do wish you would play more on the the senior tour. You definitely still have what it takes. I hate it when you get down on yourself after making a mistake - that's when you lose the momentum. Keep playing!

    - Sandy, Latham, NY

  • Greg, you're one of the top fan favorites in the game. Keep playing, your fans love to see you compete, and good look at the Tradition major.

    - Tim, Huntsville, AL

  • Greg, win or lose you are still an inspiration. I grew up watching your wonderful exploits and shared in your dissapointments. Now my son is being inspired watching your incredible skills and your great charisma. Please keep playing, a big win is just around the corner.

    - Oscar, Woodcroft, SA, Australia

  • Shark, you're close. It's always a treat to see you out there. More time in tournaments will bring even more success in golf and in the boardroom. Always rooting for you!

    - Alex, Boston

  • Greg, You are still my hero. I was so dissapointed for you at the U.S. You didn't look as inspired as you were on the previous days mate. Enjoy the moments because there are no ordinary ones. If you win we as supporters have a better week because some of our lives need an inspiration. Keep going and one will drop shortly. Don't please ever stop turning up mate. You are still a legend and by the way Fred played a very solid last round after knocking on the door for a while in previous tournaments. I noticed Saturaday he was wearing a Greg Noramn Collection Shirt. Well done and can't wait to se you in Australia again.

    - Brad, Cronulla, Sydney

  • Dear Greg, wish you a good repose and soon recovery. Don't stay disappointed, you'll be back!

    - Christiana, Vienna, Austria

  • Greg: I was at Crooked Stick with my son on Championship Sunday hoping to see a USGA Title come your way. I know it was a frustrating day for you, but keep on truckin' and it will happen. It is always wonderful to see you play and I hope you keep on your current enhanced playing schedule.

    - Peter, Urbana, Illinois

    - Ruthy, Edina, MN

  • All the best Shark! Will wake up here in Australia Monday morning, hoping to see your name at the top. Good Luck!

  • You made one little boy's day yesterday at the 1st green... watching him hold that ball and look at you was PRICELESS. Have a great round and put yourself in a position to win as you like to say!

    - Jean-Daniel, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

  • Was lucky enough to see your birdie on 18 today. Go SHARK

    - George, Acworth, Georgia

  • 323!!!!! Please find a putter! You own these guys! Next year play on the tour...

    - Scott, Lexington, KY, USA

  • Go get em shark, I have been there all the way with you. You deserve some compensation from the U.S. majors. Golf is better when you play, good luck and thanks for playing!

    - Michael, Michie, TN, USA

  • Perfect, my post a few below this one is now half true! Great round, good on ya mate, and good job making that last tricky bogey putt, that was big to end on a decent note and have momentum and the lead! You OWN this course, tear it up tomorrow...warn the lifeguards, the Shark is circling and about to attack!

    - Rabbi Dave, Spring Valley, NY

  • Greg, you are one hot guy with a hot putter. Win this big one and play more tournament golf. Forget about the senior tour, they cannot age discriminate you. They have to let you play the PGA.

    - Just, Vancouver

  • I think if Greg plays about 14 tournaments a year, like twice a month from February - through the end of August, this would keep him pretty sharp going in to the Champions Tour majors and the British Open, he wins one of the Champions Tour majors, he could get an exemption maybe into one of the other 3 PGA Tour majors.

    - Tim, Huntsville, AL

  • Greg - Wow! What a beginning and hope to see you do the same every day and win. The putting really made a difference. This should keep you on a positive course and hopefully we'll see no scores in the 70's. We're all rooting for you.

    - Linette, Sacramento, CA., U.S.A.

  • Hey Greg, 25 putts, after last week's 4th round.... a consummate professional, all my admiration!

    - Jean-Daniel, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

  • Get that putting stroke fixed and victory is sure to be yours. Good luck!

    - Amanda, Sheaffer Country Club, Orlando, FL

  • Here we go again...got the schedule all worked out, will be catching the last hole or two as you race to the lead in Round 1 and should catch almost all of a blitzing Round 2... Go get em' Greg, you can do it mate, fair dinkum you can! You are so due and deserving of one of these senior majors, I shall be praying for a fun and successful 4 days... Enjoy, try and smile out there... Cheers,

    - Rabbi Dave, Spring Valley, NY

  • Good luck. You can win this one.

    - Fawad, Houston, TX

  • I would say congrat's on a good effort at The Open but you did not win. Missed birdie chances on the first three holes did you in. Had those putts have dropped your fellow competitors would have felt the pressure around all 18 holes. The Open was yours for the taking and you let it slip away... even you would admit that. You always carry yourself with dignity and class.. .win or lose. I am and always will be in your corner. But, it is time to MAN UP and win the U.S. Senior Open...DO IT!!! Get It Done!

    - Mike, Torrance, CA

  • It's all coming together mate. Best of luck this week at Crooked Stick. Nathan Green just got one for us Aussies in Canada. Put one on the board for us in The States this week. I am off to play your old stomping ground at Beverly Park today. Cheers!

    - Garry, Sydney, Australia

  • You were right there last weekend! Go make the putting correction, course management... you will be there come the end of the week. GOOD LUCK

    - Jeff, Langdon, ND, USA

  • Greg! Jeez! Who says you can't play Augusta anymore? 317 yard driving average the last day? Wow! Your swing looked the best it has in years. Just stay on an even keel and mop everybody up at the US SENIOR OPEN this week, and start planning for a banner year in the PGA TOUR MAJORS next year. Just make sure you play a bit more so as to make sure you are ready to go at ST ANDREWS and possibly at a few other places...not naming any names...ha ha. Good luck, mate.

    - Mark, Hollywood, CA

  • Good luck this week, I am really looking forward to following your progress. It was a shame that things didnt quite go your way last week but I'm sure that with just an ounce of luck and a tail wind you can triumph this week. Enjoy yourself and just remember we are all behind you. Kind Regards,

P.S Good luck with the Presidents Cup!

    - David, New Zealand

  • Greg, with a hot putter you could have shot a 62...you were within 15 feet on about every hole for birdie....get your putter going and a US Open victory should be a lock...good luck

    - Gary, Johnson City, TN, USA

  • Go Shark!! I am driving up from Georgia to root for you. Keep up the great play!!

    - George, Acworth, Georgia

  • You were right there last weekend! Go make the putting correction, course management... you will be there come the end of the week. GOOD LUCK

    - Jeff, Langdon, ND, USA

  • Greg, your ball-striking at Sunningdale proved that you are playing a different game than we've ever seen on the over-50 tour. Anybody that saw the coverage could tell you you were five or six strokes better than the rest of the field. That darned putter just let you down. Good luck this week at (and with) that 'crooked' stick!
